Dentistry for the Entire Family: How Dental Services Differ by Age

Here, our North York dentists explain the ins and outs of family dentistry and how we are able to provide care and service to teens, kids, adults and seniors in order to keep their smiles healthy.

How do dental services change as I get older?

Kids

Routine dental care is critical for the health of childrens' developing smiles, helping them to set a solid foundation for lifelong oral health. We provide a comprehensive range of dental services for children at Sheppard Yorkland Dental.

Beginning with their first dental visit (at around 6-months-old) and throughout their school years, we will work with your child to help keep their smile healthy. We can provide regular cleanings, exams and education about proper hygiene techniques at each appointment to make sure your kid's teeth get the right amount of care each day.

For children at a higher risk than average of tooth decay, or for those that have special circumstances or needs, restorative dental services or customized treatment plans may be recommended.

Teens

As teens develop and grow more independent, their dental care will need to grow with them. Preventive dental care will continue as they see the dentist every 9 months or so.

Since many teens are concerned about their appearance and having a healthy-looking white smile, we can educate them about the connection between their daily oral hygiene practices and the look of their smile.

If orthodontic care is needed, teens will be referred to an orthodontist for assessment and perhaps require treatment with braces, clear aligners, a retainer or other appliance.

Adults

In adulthood, many people develop early-stage gum disease. This may result in painfully swollen gums and other roral health issues. Preventive care should be at the top of mind for adults. This includes at-home care and routine visits to your dentist for professional cleanings.

Many people will need their wisdom teeth removed in early adulthood. Sometimes, oral surgery, specialized care, appliances or other treatments will be recommended for specific issues such as TMJ Disorder or sleep apnea.

If restorative services such as crowns, bridges or fillings are required, we are happy to offer these and address any questions and concerns you may have.

Seniors

As you age, your mouth and teeth will naturally change, and you may also have new needs in terms of medications. This can increase your risk for developing dental health problems, including:

  • Oral cancer
  • Dry mouth (caused by medications)
  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Need for tooth replacements or dentures
  • Gum disease or periodontitis

You may notice that your teeth are becoming less sensitive from things like hot, cold or pain over time. This is because the nerves of your teeth shrink as you grow older. If your gum tissue recedes, however, your teeth may become more sensitive and their root tissue is left exposed.

Buildup of plaque and wear on your tooth enamel can also leave you susceptible to other problems. A dentist can examine your smile and help address these by recommending appropriate treatments such as dental implants, restorative services, a gum graft, gum therapy or oral surgery.
